PRACTICAL SKILLS · LEARN BEFORE YOU NEED IT

Try a 15-minute household readiness check.

A calm practice session to find one missing step. Keep the lights and utilities on; this is a walk-through, not an emergency simulation.

Agree on the exercise first.

Tell everyone what you are doing. Include any access or communication needs and let people opt out. Do not call emergency services, trigger alarms, interrupt medical equipment or shut off utilities for this exercise. Stop if a real emergency occurs.

Four checks, one small fix.

  1. 1

    MINUTES 0–3

    Find the plan

Locate the household contacts and meeting-place information. Can another person find it without your phone? Use the free plan if you need a starting point.

  2. 2

    MINUTES 3–6

    Find light and power

Locate a working light and the correct charging cable. Try ordinary operation. Note an empty battery or missing cable without turning off household power.

  3. 3

    MINUTES 6–10

    Find essentials

Point out drinking water, ready-to-eat food and personal supplies. Check access, not just whether the items exist. Leave medicines in their appropriate storage.

  4. 4

    MINUTES 10–15

    Talk through leaving

Discuss where you would go, how you would get there and what each person would take. Include pets. Choose one gap to fix and an owner for that action.

Write down one useful result.

We could not find…

Name the missing item, instruction or contact.

Our next action is…

We will check again…

Keep these notes with your plan. There is no preparedness score to pass and no need to submit personal details here.

Use the plan above to identify a specific need, then compare suitable equipment. Buying more is not a substitute for practicing the plan.
