The charger check: test the cable, not just the battery
A charged power bank is only part of the setup. Try the actual phone, cable and port together before you need them.

Start with the phone you use every day
A drawer full of cables can look reassuring until you need one particular connector. A simple check now can reveal that the useful cable is in your work bag, that the bank needs charging, or that a familiar adapter belongs to an older phone.
Our suggested exercise starts with three things: your phone, a suitable power bank you already own and the cable you intend to use. Place them together on a clear surface. Follow the equipment instructions and use undamaged, compatible equipment.
Check the whole connection
- Check the power bank’s charge indicator and its instructions.
- Connect the intended cable to the correct output and your phone.
- Confirm that the phone indicates it is charging. Some banks require a button press.
- Disconnect and put the matching cable with the bank, in a place the household knows.
Seeing the charging symbol answers a small but useful question: this connection works now. It does not establish how many full charges the bank will deliver or how long it will keep another device running.
Separate a phone need from an appliance need
Write down the job before comparing a bigger purchase. Keeping a phone available is a different question from running a refrigerator. Our backup-power guide and runtime estimator explain what to compare when capacity and appliance demand matter.
The Red Cross recommends planning for communication and electrical needs during outages. A charged phone does not guarantee mobile service. Keep important contact details on paper too; essential medical equipment needs a separate plan with the care team and equipment provider.
Make the setup easy to find again
A small pouch or a dedicated drawer section can be enough. If you borrow the cable for everyday use, return it afterward. Revisit the setup when you change phones or replace a charger.
Your next small task: make one complete charging setup easy to find. Add its location to your household plan rather than buying an assortment of backups you have not checked.
